Exchange-Project  Spain - Germany

Exchange Germany-Spain in Navalmoral de la Mata

In June we went to Extremadura in Spain. We have been there from Monday the 7th till Friday the 11th. The exchange started at the Airport in Hamburg at 9 a.m.

The kids from the 7th and 8th grade where excited to meet their friends from Spain.

When we landed in Madrid in the afternoon and got out of the plane, we were welcomed by the Spanish pupils and their teachers. When we left the airport we saw the beautiful weather of Spain. The sun was shining and we had about 30°C. We where all exhausted and relieved when we finally reached the bus. But the Spanish teacher, Inma, told us that we would have a little trip through Madrid, so we were all happy again and looking forward to getting to know Madrid. We had just about two hours there, but Madrid is a very exciting, interesting and young city. We saw the castle, the Dom and the “plaza mayor”.

Everything was different from Germany. The people look different and the buildings were not like ours. The German pupils realised quickly that we were in a different country and maybe they developed an idea of what they had to expect in Navalmoral.

After the trip through Madrid we needed to go by bus for two more hours to get to our final destination: Navalmoral de la Mata.

We drove through the landscape of Spain and saw the sunset, which was very beautiful. It was almost night when we arrived in Navalmoral. From the street we could see the town and this was kind of amazing, because with all the lights it looked very beautiful.

We arrived at the school I.E.S Albalat, where the parents of the Spanish pupils and the other teachers waited for us. Everyone went to their homes and the exchange finally began.

The next morning started at 8:30 a.m. at the school. The German pupils were talking about their first evening with the families. Everything was so different. The Spanish people go to bed so late, the houses or flats are so different and of course the food isn’t the same like in Germany. Oh my God, how should they survive the next three days?!

The Spanish pupils gave us a guide through their school and after this the kids played some typical German and Spanish games outside of the school.

After this the principal of Navalmoral and the headmaster of the school gave a little speech to welcome us and to talk about the exchange itself.

After that we drove to La Vera, where we stopped at something like a natural swimming-pool. It was water what comes down from the mountain. It looks very nice, but of course it was very cold, too. But the Spanish pupils haven’t had any problems with that and jumped into the water like it had about 23°C. Some of the Germans and Mrs. Weinhold were as brave as the Spanish pupils and jumped into the icy water as well. In the end we had lunch at a little restaurant.

Furthermore we went to a monastery called “Monasterio de Juste”. It’s the place where Charles the 5th died. We had a guided tour through the rooms and after that we drove to a German War Cementery. Later we drove back to Navalmoral where the kids could spend the evening on their own. Some went shopping and ate ice-cream and the others were sitting in the park and ate pizza. Of course the evening ended quite late.

But the next day we met at 9.30 a.m. in front of the school, so the pupils had the chance to sleep a bit longer. And that was good, because the Wednesday was very hard. We were visiting three places. First we drove to a place called Gipsy’s Jump and to the National park called “Monfragüe”. But it was raining a lot so we stopped at Gipsy’s Jump. We had a look at the river and the rocks. Then we drove on to Cáceres, the capital city of Extremadura. We went through the old part of the city, where it looks like in the middle-age and after that we have been to a shopping centre. There the kids had spare time for two hours, of course they went shopping. The teachers went to a restaurant to have lunch.

After the two hours we drove to Trujillo. It’s a small, but famous town. The Spanish settlers, which conquered Peru, had lived there. We walked through the town, while it was raining all the time. When we arrived in Navalmoral it was about 7 p.m. The pupils spend the evening on their own again in the park and the teachers went to a very nice restaurant.

On Thursday it was all about the party in the afternoon. The kids could spend the first half of the day with their families. Some of them had a guided tour through Navalmoral and some went shopping.

At 2 p.m. we all met at a place called “La Charca Mayen”, which is a bit outside of Navalmoral.  There we had our little “fiesta”. We had barbecue and sung karaoke, together with teachers and the parents. It was a very nice ending of the whole exchange. After six hours the party ended for the pupils. They went back to Navalmoral where they met again to spend the last evening together on their own. The teachers celebrated at “La Charca Mayen” till late at night.  Everyone knew that they would need to say “goodbye” to friends the next day.

Although the German kids  about were sometimes grumpy about Spanish lifestyle, there have been some tears running down the cheeks of their faces. The drive back to Madrid was very quite. Most where falling asleep because of the short night and the exhausted but awesome week in Extremadura.

The flight back to Germany was all about complications. When we sat in the plane, we received the news that it would take about two more hours till the plane would be ready to take off. In the end we had to wait three hours there, till we finally started. Of course we missed our next plane in Brussels. At Brussels Airport we needed to wait two more hours. We arrived in Hamburg at about 8 p.m. Finally!

Everyone was happy to see their families and so they went home and the journey found a quick end. It was an exhausting but wonderful week in Spain. Hopefully we will meet our Spanish friends again!
